Your Future Mixtape chats with Kid Runner about the band’s influences
& their favourite artists
Last week Your Future Mixtape caught up with Columbian alternative pop band Kid Runner. The band consists of Drew, Fran, Scott, Kurt and Bobby and their music is insanely catchy! Check out my interview with them below, and don’t forget to give their single ‘Different Kind of Love‘ a listen!
Can you tell us a little bit about the band (for those who don’t know you)?
Sure! We are an alternative pop band and we hail from Columbus, Ohio. We’ve been dubbed an “electronic pop” band as well because we use a lot of samples and synths in our music. We approve of either title.
How long have you all been making music together?
Drew: We got together towards the end of 2011 and kind of finalized things as a band very early in 2012, which is when we started writing and recording together. We played our first show as a band later that year sometime in September. It was frightening.
Tricky question, but do you guys have an all time favourite song?
Drew: That is a tricky question. It’s hard to narrow it down to just one since there’s so many amazing songs in the history of music. But for right now I’ll go with Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End by The Beatles. It’s just an amazing ending to Abbey Road, and Sir Paul writing that knowing that it was probably the end of the road for The Beatles, you can’t listen to it without thinking that damn, that really is the perfect ending.
Fran: Hmmm. I used to say “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel. It’s so simple and sad. And I like sad things. So I think that I’ll continue to say that that’s my favorite…for now.
Who would you say is the band’s biggest influence?
Drew: We all come from different musical backgrounds and have a wide variety of influences that it’s hard it pinpoint the biggest one. Our influences range from hip-hop to pop-punk, death metal to singer-songwriter…it’s all over the place.
Fran: We are a very eclectic band. I think you can kind of hear all of those influences when you listen to our music. Except for the death metal…I’m not sure if that made it in there.
Who is your favourite artist/band at the moment?
Scott: The Wombats
Fran: I can’t stop listening to the new Youth Lagoon album.
Bobby: Foals —their songs just move so well
Which song would you cover on Karaoke?
Scott: One Week by Barenaked Ladies
Fran: “Lose Yourself” by Eminem. I’ve got all of the words on lockdown. For the most part.
Bobby: I’d definitely karaoke Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
Which song or artist is your guilty pleasure?
Fran: I don’t believe in guilty pleasures…be proud of what you listen to! With that being said… “Bad Touch” by Bloodhound Gang….
Bobby: One Republic, although I don’t really feel all that guilty about it. Maybe Lady Gaga…again, no shame!
Scott: “Rollin’” by Limp Bizkit
Can we find you guys playing shows in the UK any time soon?
We sure hope so! That would be absolutely amazing. We will try our best!
